Why Ingredient Order Matters: The Label Trick Every Smart Shopper Should Know

Most people flip over a package and glance at the ingredient list, but here's something many shoppers don't know: The order of the ingredients matters just as much as the ingredients themselves.

By law, ingredients are listed from highest amount to lowest amount by weight. That means the first ingredient makes up the largest portion of what's inside the package. It's a simple detail, but it can completely change how you look at the foods you buy. Take granola, for example. Many brands feature beautiful photos of nuts, seeds, and berries on the front of the package, but when you turn it over, the first few ingredients often tell a different story: Oats, Sugar Rice syrup, Seed oils. Almonds, pecans, pumpkin seeds (all the good stuff) are sometimes much farther down the list than you'd expect. That doesn't necessarily make the product "bad," but it does tell you what's making up most of what you're eating.

At Haley's Pantry, we wanted to do things differently. Our ingredient list starts with nutrient-dense nuts and seeds because that's exactly what makes up the majority of every bag. We don't rely on fillers, refined sugar, seed oils, artificial flavors, or ingredients that sound better on the front of the package than they do on the back. The next time you're shopping, try this simple exercise: Before looking at the nutrition facts, read the first three ingredients. They'll tell you far more about the product than the marketing on the front ever will because when it comes to real food, what's at the top of the list matters. Happy label reading!

XO,

Haley
